Treating Atopic Dermatitis with Simple Home Remedies
Atopic dermatitis, or eczema, is a skin condition that causes red, rough, and itchy skin patches. The skin of affected people may not produce as many fats and oils as needed and also does not retain enough water. As the skin of the protective barrier is not as good as it should be, it allows irritants and bacteria to enter the body. This causes the skin to further break, become irritated, cracked and inflamed.
The weakened protective barrier is the cause of most life-altering conditions that come with eczema. Children and adolescents are mostly affected. Surprisingly, the exact cause of eczema is still a mystery. Though it is found to be a challenge to treat atopic dermatitis, there are many treatments and home remedies that help to reduce itching, inflammations, infections and cracked skin. Some home remedies that can help to relieve the symptoms of atopic dermatitis would include
1. Natural moisturizers
To relieve itchiness and to help lock in the moisture, some natural products can help. Using cold-pressed coconut oil by applying it directly to the affected area helps to moisturize the skin and reduces bacteria. It is advised to use it at least twice a day on damp skin. Applying sunflower oil on eczema twice a day reduces inflammation and improves the protective barrier of the skin. A plant extract known as Cardiospermum helps to reduce itchiness, inflammation, and bacteria on the skin.
2. Bathing
For people with eczema, it is essential to bathe every day, as it keeps the skin hydrated and free of infection. To manage this condition people with eczema can take different types of bath with oatmeal, baking soda, vinegar, bath oil, and bleach. Bathing should be immediately followed by the application of moisturizers within three minutes of bathing. This will stop the skin from becoming dry.
3. Skincare
Adopting skincare routines and habits help to cope with atopic dermatitis. Avoid scratching the affected area to reduce inflammation. Woolen clothing that irritates the skin should also be avoided. It is ideal to also avoid strong soaps and detergents and products that may have fragrances, scents, and dyes. Washing the skin with lukewarm water is advised while scrubbing dry skin is not. Wet wrap therapy is recommended, as wrapping wet strips of fabric or gauze around the affected areas are said to keep the skin hydrated and seals in the moisturizer. The wrap can be left on for several hours or even overnight. Wear full-sleeved clothing and hats to cover yourself when you go out in the sun or have to spend long hours outdoors.
A person with atopic dermatitis can often manage the condition by using simple home remedies, coping tips and avoiding triggers. These treatments most often reduce itchiness and dry skin. It also lowers the risk of skin infections. Though there is no treatment as such for atopic dermatitis as of now, such remedies help relieve symptoms to a great extent and also increases the amount of time that the disease stays in remission.
