If the oils clog the pores, it can cause acne. Those who have acne should avoid food items that are high in sugar, also known as high-glycemic food. Some of the high glycemic foods that you should stay away from to reduce your acne is refined flour-based items like bread, cookies, pasta, and, of course, sugar. Additionally, chocolate is a no-no for those who are acne-prone.

2. Foods that induce hormonal imbalances
Research by dermatologists suggests that foods that have inflammatory properties and those that stimulate unchecked production of hormones can also cause an increase in oil production. Some food items that should be avoided to decrease the incidence of acne are:

  • High glycemic carbs
  • Dairy
  • Trans fats
  • Saturated fats

3. Foods that help contain and prevent acne
On the other hand, foods that are predominantly plant-based, low on glycemic items, and high in complex carbohydrates can help nurture the skin and prevent skin related problems including acne. They include:

  • Whole grains like wheat germ and buckwheat
  • Legumes – Lentils, chickpeas, peas, peanuts
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables – Carrots, apricots, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, blueberries, oranges, avocado
  • Omega-3 fatty acids – fatty fish like salmon and mackerel
  • Foods rich in vitamin A and E – Vegetable oils, almonds, hazelnuts, spinach, and broccoli
  • Food is rich in antioxidants – leek, onion, garlic, grapes, berries, red wine, and green tea.
